Santa Monica's "Community Emergency Response Team" marked its first year Tuesday with a gathering at the city's Emergency Operations Center, which was activated during the tragic shooting incident earlier this month. There are now 100 residents trained as CERT members to help police and firefighters in case of a major emergency. CERT volunteers recieve hands-on training in fire supression, search-and-rescue and triage. Four groups of CERT volunteers have now gone through the program, with the next team scheduled for training in August. The Office of Emergency Management oversees CERT.
